Life in the UK test 2026: the complete guide

Whether you are applying for British citizenship or indefinite leave to remain (ILR), the Life in the UK test is a mandatory requirement. This guide covers everything you need to know about taking the test in 2026.

What is the Life in the UK test?

The Life in the UK test is a computer-based examination that assesses your knowledge of British history, culture, traditions, and government. It was introduced in 2005 and is administered by the Home Office as part of the settlement and naturalisation process.

Who needs to take the test?

You must pass the Life in the UK test if you are applying for:

  • Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK
  • British citizenship (naturalisation)

Who is exempt?

You do not need to take the test if you are:

  • Under 18 years of age
  • 65 or older
  • Have certain long-term physical or mental conditions (with medical evidence)

Test format and structure

The test is straightforward in format:

  • 24 multiple-choice questions
  • 45 minutes to complete
  • Pass mark: 75% (you need at least 18 correct answers out of 24)
  • Questions are drawn randomly from the official handbook
  • Results are given immediately after you finish

What topics does the test cover?

All questions come from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition). The main topic areas include:

The values and principles of the UK

British traditions, customs, and the importance of mutual respect and tolerance.

What is the UK?

The geography, nations, regions, and key characteristics of the United Kingdom.

A long and illustrious history

From early Britain through the Middle Ages, the Tudors and Stuarts, the industrial revolution, the world wars, and modern Britain. This is typically the largest section.

A modern, thriving society

Religion, customs, sport, arts, culture, and leisure in contemporary Britain.

The UK government, the law, and your role

Parliament, devolved government, the monarchy, the legal system, voting, and fundamental rights and responsibilities.

How much does the test cost in 2026?

The test fee is £50 per attempt. This is a fixed fee set by the Home Office and is non-refundable, even if you fail. If you need to retake the test, you will need to pay £50 again each time. Use our cost calculator to understand the full costs involved in your citizenship journey.
