How to book the Life in the UK test: step-by-step

Booking the Life in the UK test is straightforward once you know the process. This guide walks you through every step, from creating your account to arriving at the test centre.

Before you book: are you eligible?

The Life in the UK test is required for most people applying for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or British citizenship through naturalisation. Check whether you need to take the test using our citizenship eligibility checker.

Exemptions

You do not need to take the test if you are:

  • Under 18 years of age
  • 65 years of age or older
  • Have a long-term physical or mental condition supported by medical evidence

What you need to book

Before starting the booking process, make sure you have:

  • Valid identity document: Your passport, biometric residence permit (BRP), or travel document. You must bring this same document to the test centre.
  • UK address: The address where you currently live in the UK.
  • Email address: For booking confirmation and correspondence.
  • Debit or credit card: To pay the £50 test fee.

Step-by-step booking process

Step 1: Go to the official booking website

Visit gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. This is the only official way to book the test. Do not use third-party booking sites, as they may charge inflated fees.

Step 2: Create an account or sign in

If this is your first time, you will need to create an account with your email address and a password. If you are rebooking after a failed attempt, sign in with your existing details.

Step 3: Enter your personal details

You will be asked for your full name (as it appears on your ID), date of birth, nationality, and your identity document number. Double-check these details carefully, as they must match your ID exactly.

Step 4: Choose a test centre

Select a test centre that is convenient for you. There are over 30 centres across the UK in cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Leeds, and Belfast. Use our test centre finder to see all locations and plan your journey.

Step 5: Choose a date and time

Available slots are shown for your chosen centre. Tests are available most weekdays, and some centres offer weekend slots. Book as far in advance as you can to get your preferred date.

Step 6: Pay the £50 fee

The test costs £50 per attempt, payable by debit or credit card. This fee is non-refundable, even if you cancel, miss your appointment, or fail the test. To understand total costs across your citizenship journey, use our cost calculator.

Step 7: Receive your confirmation

You will receive an email confirmation with your booking details, test centre address, date, and time. Save this email and make a note of your booking reference.

What to bring on test day

  • Your valid ID (the same document you used when booking)
  • Your booking confirmation (printed or on your phone)
  • Nothing else is permitted in the test room. Phones, bags, notes, and watches are stored securely.

Tips for a smooth test day

  • Arrive 15 minutes early. If you arrive late, you may not be allowed to take the test and will lose your £50 fee.
  • Know your route. Check transport links to the test centre in advance. Use our test centres page to see locations on a map.
  • Prepare thoroughly. Do not book until you are confident in your ability to pass. Use the readiness calculator to check your score.
