What happens if you fail the Life in the UK test?
What happens if you fail the Life in the UK test?
Failing the Life in the UK test is disappointing, but it is not the end of the road. Around 30% of first-time candidates do not pass, so you are not alone. Here is exactly what happens and what to do next.
You get your result immediately
When you finish the test, your result appears on screen straight away. If you have not reached the pass mark of 75% (18 out of 24 correct), the screen will show that you have not passed. You will not be told which specific questions you got wrong, only your overall result.
You can retake the test
There is no limit to how many times you can take the Life in the UK test. However, there are two important rules:
- 7-day waiting period: You must wait at least 7 days before rebooking and taking the test again.
- £50 per attempt: Each retake costs £50. This fee is non-refundable regardless of the outcome.
This means failing can become expensive quickly. A single retake adds £50 to your total costs. Use our cost calculator to understand the financial impact and why passing first time matters.
How to rebook
Rebooking follows the same process as your original booking:
- Go to gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test
- Create a new booking (or log into your existing account)
- Choose your preferred test centre and date (at least 7 days from your failed attempt)
- Pay the £50 fee
- Attend the test with the same valid ID
Find your nearest centre on our test centres page.
How to improve your score for the retake
If you failed, something in your preparation needs to change. Here is a practical plan:
Identify your weak areas
Since the test does not tell you which questions you got wrong, you need to diagnose your weaknesses through practice. Take a free practice quiz and pay close attention to which topic areas you struggle with.
Focus your revision
Rather than re-reading the entire handbook, concentrate on the sections where you score lowest. BritPass tracks your performance by chapter and topic, showing you exactly where to focus.
Take more mock tests
Use the mini mock test tool to simulate exam conditions. Aim to consistently score 20 or above (not just 18) before rebooking. This gives you a comfortable margin on test day.
Check your readiness before rebooking
Do not waste another £50 on an attempt you might not pass. Use the readiness calculator to check whether your practice performance indicates you are ready. We recommend a readiness score of at least 85% before booking.
Do not let one failure put you off
Many successful British citizens failed the test on their first try. What matters is learning from the experience and preparing more thoroughly. BritPass users achieve a 94% first-time pass rate thanks to targeted practice with 500+ questions and unlimited mock tests. Lifetime plan holders also get a £50 pass guarantee, meaning if you do not pass, we cover the cost of your next test attempt.
