About the Edinburgh centre

The Edinburgh Life in the UK test centre is run by MTS at 40 Sciennes, on the ground floor in the Newington district just south of the city centre and close to the Meadows. It's a residential, university-fringe part of town that serves candidates from across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife sitting the Life in the UK test.

Located in the Newington area of Edinburgh, south of the Old Town. This is the primary test centre for Scotland's capital and the Lothians region.

Getting to the Edinburgh test centre

• •Edinburgh Waverley, the main rail station, is roughly a 20-minute walk or a short bus ride south to Sciennes in Newington.
• •Newington is well served by buses running south from the city centre along the Bridges and Nicolson Street; the area is a short walk from the Meadows. Edinburgh's tram line does not reach this part of the city.
• •This is a busy residential area, so on-street parking is limited and mostly controlled; driving in is possible but allow extra time to find a space.
• •There is no dedicated car park at the centre and surrounding streets in Newington are largely permit or pay-and-display controlled, so allow time to find a space or use public transport.

• •Lockers are provided at most centres for phones, bags, and belongings.

What to bring on test day

• 1.Your valid, unexpired passport or biometric residence permit (BRP) — the same ID you used to book.

• 3.Arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment.

You cannot bring phones, bags, or study materials into the test room. Lockers are provided at most centres.

About the Life in the UK test

The Life in the UK test has 24 multiple-choice questions. You have 45 minutes to complete it and need at least 18 out of 24 (75%) to pass. It covers British history, traditions, values, government, and everyday life.

Results are given immediately after the test. If you pass, you receive a letter confirming your result, which you need for your settlement or citizenship application.
