Life in the UK test pass mark: what score do you need in 2026

What is the pass mark?

The pass mark for the Life in the UK test is 75%. The test has 24 questions, so you need to get at least 18 correct to pass.

What does the test look like?

You get 45 minutes to answer 24 multiple-choice questions. Most questions give you four options and you pick one. Some are true or false. The questions are pulled randomly from a large bank covering all chapters of the official handbook, so every test is slightly different.

You take the test on a computer at an approved test centre. There's no writing involved , it's all clicking answers on screen.

Is 75% hard to reach?

That depends on how you prepare. The national pass rate is around 70–75%, meaning roughly one in four people fail. But among people who've done structured practice with mock tests, the pass rate is much higher.

The questions that trip people up tend to fall into a few categories:

  • Specific dates , when did women get the vote? When was the last successful invasion of Britain?
  • Devolved powers , which decisions are made by the Scottish Parliament vs Westminster?
  • Cultural knowledge , patron saints, national days, famous British figures
  • Legal rights , what rights do EU citizens have? At what age can you vote?

If you can consistently score 80%+ on practice tests, you're well prepared for the real thing.

What happens if you don't reach 75%?

You fail, and you'll need to pay another £50 to rebook. There's no limit on retakes, but each attempt costs time and money. Getting it right the first time saves both.

What happens if you pass?

You receive a pass notification letter, usually within 7 days. You'll need this letter as part of your citizenship or ILR application. Keep it safe , you can request a replacement, but it causes delays.

How to make sure you pass

The single best thing you can do is take realistic mock tests. Not just reading, not just flashcards , actual timed practice in the same format as the real exam. This builds familiarity with the question style and reveals your weak spots before the real test does.

Aim to consistently score 20+ out of 24 before you book your test date. That gives you a comfortable margin above the 18 you need.
