British citizenship timeline: from application to ceremony

Becoming a British citizen is a meaningful milestone, but the journey involves several steps spread over months or even years. Here is a clear timeline of what to expect at each stage.

Stage 1: Meet the eligibility requirements

Before you can apply for British citizenship (naturalisation), you must meet several conditions:

  • Residency: You must have lived in the UK for at least 5 years (3 years if married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen).
  • Immigration status: You must hold indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or EU settled status.
  • Time with ILR: You must have held ILR for at least 12 months before applying.
  • Absences: You must not have been outside the UK for more than 450 days in the last 5 years, or more than 90 days in the last 12 months.
  • Good character: No serious criminal convictions or immigration violations.
  • Language: You must demonstrate English language ability (B1 level or above on the CEFR).
  • Life in the UK test: You must have passed the Life in the UK test.

Not sure if you qualify? Use our citizenship eligibility checker to find out.

Timeline: This stage depends on your personal circumstances. Most people spend 3-5 years building up their residency before they become eligible.

Stage 2: Pass the Life in the UK test

The Life in the UK test is a 24-question multiple-choice exam based on the official handbook. You need to score 75% (18 out of 24) to pass. The test costs £50 per attempt and results are given immediately.

You should take the test before submitting your citizenship application, as you will need your pass notification as part of the application.

Timeline: Most people need 3-6 weeks of study to prepare adequately. Use the study countdown planner to build your revision schedule. BritPass users achieve a 94% first-time pass rate with 500+ practice questions and unlimited mock tests.

Stage 3: Gather your documents

You will need to collect several documents for your application:

  • Valid passport or travel document
  • Biometric residence permit (BRP)
  • Life in the UK test pass notification
  • English language qualification (or proof of exemption)
  • Two referees who have known you for at least 3 years (one must be a professional)
  • Evidence of residency (utility bills, bank statements, payslips)

Timeline: Allow 2-4 weeks to gather everything, especially referee declarations which need to be signed and witnessed.

Stage 4: Submit your application

Applications are made online through the gov.uk website. As of 2026, the application fee is £1,580 for adults. This is non-refundable. You will also need to attend a biometrics appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Service (UKVCAS) centre.

Use our cost calculator to get a full breakdown of citizenship costs, including the test fee, application fee, and ceremony fee.

Timeline: The online form takes 1-2 hours to complete carefully. Your biometrics appointment is usually available within 1-2 weeks of submitting.

Stage 5: Wait for a decision

After submitting your application and attending your biometrics appointment, the Home Office will process your case. They may contact you for additional information.

Timeline: Processing times vary, but most straightforward applications receive a decision within 6 months. Some cases take longer, particularly if there are complications with the good character requirement or missing documents.

Track where you are in the process using our citizenship timeline tool.

Stage 6: Attend a citizenship ceremony

Once your application is approved, your local council will invite you to a citizenship ceremony. This is a formal event where you:

  • Take an oath of allegiance (or affirmation) to the Crown
  • Make a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom
  • Receive your certificate of British citizenship

Ceremonies are typically held at your local register office or town hall. Some councils offer individual ceremonies, while others hold group events.

Timeline: You will usually receive your ceremony invitation within 2-4 weeks of your application being approved. Ceremonies are typically scheduled within 4-8 weeks of the invitation.

Stage 7: Apply for a British passport

After receiving your certificate of British citizenship at the ceremony, you can apply for a British passport. This is done through the Passport Office and is a separate process with its own fee.

Timeline: Standard passport applications currently take up to 10 weeks.
